The Art of Hanging Art

Last month, I talked about finding the right art for your space. This month, I want to talk about what comes next: hanging it.

Hanging art is one of the simplest ways to transform a room, but doing it well takes a little more thought than just hammering in a nail. The goal isn’t just to fill an empty wall. It’s to create a balanced, eye-catching focal point.

Start with placement. Try not to hang art too high. Eye level is usually best, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor. If you’re hanging a piece above furniture, aim for about 6 to 10 inches above it.

Next, consider scale. A small framed piece on a large wall can feel lost, while an oversized piece in a tight space can feel overwhelming. If your art is on the smaller side, try grouping multiple pieces together to create a gallery wall. Lay everything out on the floor first so you can play with spacing and arrangement before committing to the wall. Spacing pieces about 2 to 3 inches apart usually works well.

Ultimately, hanging art is part design and part intuition. Take your time, step back, make adjustments as needed, and most importantly, have fun with it.
